I am looking for a Pastoral Support Lead for a brand new SEMH specialist provision in the Royal Borough of Richmond Upon Thames – Could it be you?
Set within a therapeutic environment, the school is well-informed on neurodiversity, emotional, sensory, and physical needs, relationships, and attachment. The provision demonstrates inclusive, strengths-based practice, and the resilient development of every child is at the core of its ethos. As this provision was opened in September 2024, they currently have 7 students enrolled.
About the Pastoral Support Lead position
The Pastoral Support Lead will work with all pupils but have a particular complex caseload to coordinate and conduct multi-disciplinary assessments, undertake family work as required, work individually with some students, liaise with Social Care, and oversee new pupil introduction. You will provide the link between families and the school. This will include addressing concerns and monitoring pupil attendance, overall results, and punctuality, as well as ensuring there is a strong channel of communication with all partnership agencies and parents/carers. The role will see you supporting the Headteacher and the Senior Teacher with managerial tasks such as assigning duties to Teaching Assistants, and you will complete individual Education and Behavioural Plans for each pupil, identifying what matters require more focus.
There are many responsibilities connected to this position, such as developing Integration Plans for pupils coming to school for the first time, identifying possible issues of concern regarding pupils' pastoral and academic progress, organizing inter-agency meetings, and expanding ongoing liaison with external works such as Youth Offending Teams, Police, and other curriculum support areas.
About the Ideal Pastoral Support Lead
Education & Qualifications
GCSE (or equivalent) grade C or above in Mathematics and English
NVQ Level 3 or above in Family Support, Social Work, Youth Work, Community Development, or related field (Desirable)
Recognised Social Work Qualification, e.g., CQSW, CSS, DipSW, Degree in Social Work, or equivalent (Desirable)
Knowledge & Experience
Minimum of two years post-qualifying experience of direct work with families
Experience in directly supporting and working with young people
Knowledge of the stages of child development
Knowledge of current childcare and/or social care legislation
Knowledge of the existence and effects of social disadvantage and discrimination
Knowledge of group dynamics
Knowledge and understanding of legislation and regulations relating to young people who are “looked after” by Local Authorities
Experience in the management and supervision of staff (Desirable)
Skills & Ability
Utilise a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions with families and young people.
Excellent organisational skills including managing a caseload, time management, planning, report writing and target setting.
Ability to build strong working relationships with all staff and work well as part of a team.
Ability to work with a diverse range of families in a non-discriminatory and empowering way.
A high standard of interpersonal, literacy, and communication skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people, including parents/carers, pupils, and professionals.
