Are you passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people struggling with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) challenges? Do you have experience working with children affected by trauma, as well as those with special educational needs (SEN) such as autism or speech, language, and communication difficulties (SLCN)? If so, we want to hear from you!
We are seeking a Behaviour Mentor to join our Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Newham after the October half term. Our school takes a holistic, therapeutic approach, utilizing a trauma-informed model to support students with complex needs.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide 1:1 and small group support to students with SEMH, trauma, and SEN, helping them develop coping mechanisms and positive behaviours.
Build strong, trusting relationships with students to support both their emotional well-being and academic progress.
Implement therapeutic interventions and trauma-informed strategies to create a safe, nurturing environment.
Work closely with students who have SEN, including autism and speech and language communication challenges, adapting support to suit their individual needs.
Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and external professionals to develop and maintain effective behaviour management plans.
Monitor student progress and report on their behavioural, emotional, and social development.
Help students build resilience, self-esteem, and positive peer relationships.
Assist with reintegrating students into mainstream education, where appropriate.
The Ideal Candidate Will:
Have experience working with young people dealing with SEMH, trauma, and SEN, ideally in a PRU or similar environment.
Be knowledgeable about trauma-informed and therapeutic practices.
Be patient, empathetic, and resilient, with an understanding of the challenges faced by students with complex needs.
Have excellent communication and de-escalation skills.
Be proactive, adaptable, and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Hold a relevant qualification in education, mental health, or behaviour support (preferred but not essential).
Possess a valid DBS check or be willing to undergo one.
