About the Role

School Based Occupational Therapist - London

Are you an experienced band 6/7 Occupational Therapist looking to become part of a multidisciplinary therapy team for a SEND school?

Do you have a strong paediatric OT background and passion for paediatric support?

I am looking for a band 6/7 OT to become part of a permanent multidisciplinary therapy teams in schools

About the role of School Based Occupational Therapist

School-based occupational therapists focus on addressing educational needs to promote students' participation and performance in school. This may involve focusing on sensory and functional needs, as well as social skills. As an OT based in SEND school settings, you will look at the whole child, tackling individual tasks, helping students find ways to do the things they need and want to do. You will liaise closely with the multi-disciplinary clinical team to provide an intensive treatment service. You will engage the children and young people within the school in innovative, helpful therapeutic and meaningful activity, supporting them in learning and reaching their full potential.

Requirements for School Based Occupational Therapist

  • To work as a school based Occupational Therapist, you will need to hold a recognised Occupational Therapy degree, be HCPC registered and a registered member of the British College of Occupational Therapists. You will need solid experience, ideally working with highly vulnerable children, or children with complex needs
  • Imaginative: It’s certainly worth keeping in mind that students may become discouraged during their treatment session so it’s important to remain imaginative to create a welcoming and accepting environment
  • Collaborative: It’s important to remain open to collaboration with your  students’ team
  • Patient: Students may react to their OT sessions differently or could even feel defeated at times. In any case, remaining patient to keep them assured of their progress and maintaining a positive attitude will help to encourage the student during their sessions
  • Communicative: Keeping open communication with your students will help to offer them clarity and comfort around their progress, ultimately leading to a sense of encouragement. As well as communicating with students, OTs should possess strong communication skills in order to adequately explain updates to the students’ team members such as other therapists, teachers, and parents
  • This is a band 6/7 OT role but we want to hear from overseas trained and newly qualified OTs too as there is a possible band 5 OT role available once an experienced team is in place
  • School hours are typically 8.30 to 3.30/4pm, so for OTs looking to balance family life, this is a huge benefit. This also benefits OTs who work privately or like to have free time to work on other projects!
